Menopause—oh, what a ride! This natural phase in a woman’s life can be quite the rollercoaster, with symptoms that manage to affect both physical and mental well-being. Let me share my journey and how Nyarai swooped in like a superhero, offering strategies that helped me and my squad navigate these menopausal twists and turns.

First off, those hot flushes—talk about an unwelcome visitor! Imagine this: you’re in the middle of an important meeting or out on a fun date, and suddenly, your face, neck, and chest feel like they’re on fire. Not to mention the night sweats that turn your bed into a soaking mess, making sleep a distant dream and leaving you feeling like a zombie the next day.

Then there’s the brain fog. Picture this: you’re wrapping up your PhD, and suddenly, you can’t remember a thing. Concentration? Out the window. Mental clarity? A distant memory. It was incredibly frustrating, Nyarai, my high school buddy turned Menopause coach pulled off the ultimate rescue mission.

During my birthday celebration last year, Nyarai hosted a session that was nothing short of a revelation. She introduced me and a bunch of friends to life-changing strategies, like incorporating a balanced diet rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. The magic trick? Drinking lots of water throughout the day to keep cool and fend off those pesky hot flushes.

I’ll admit, I still need to up my game when it comes to physical activity. I adore swimming and I’m working on managing my weight, which I learned can actually help with the symptoms.

And let’s not forget the big leap—starting Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). After years of resisting, I finally took the plunge. Thanks to Nyarai and her team, I’ve learned to embrace this phase of life with patience and self-compassion, armed with strategies and support to manage these symptoms effectively.

Menopause may be a wild ride, but with Menopause coaches like Nyarai and a bit of humour, I’m learning to enjoy the journey. Cheers to embracing every twist and turn with grace and a smile!

My story is one of resilience and redemption. Like many young Zimbabweans, I once struggled with substance use, a coping mechanism that spiraled into addiction—costing me my marriage, stability, and sense of purpose. But through the compassionate mentorship of Nyarai and a structured support system, I reclaimed my life. Today, I stand sober, transformed, and driven, an aspiring PhD candidate, a mental health advocate, and a dedicated public health professional.

In my role at the Harare Institute of Public Health, I collaborate with Nyarai to tackle stigmatized issues in African communities, particularly substance abuse and the mental health challenges linked to hormonal transitions like menopause and andropause. Left unaddressed, these conditions can fuel depression, addiction, and a profound loss of identity. Additionally, she has been instrumental at Zimbabwe’s Parirenyatwa Hospital Psychiatric Unit, facilitating support groups helping individuals reintegrate into society with dignity.

My journey proves that even in the darkest moments, healing is possible—with the right support and compassion. Now, I’m committed to lighting the path for others.
